This course is a semester-long introduction to biblical Hebrew grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, with an emphasis on learning to read the Hebrew Bible. Grammar and vocabulary are treated as tools for reading, and class meetings combine concise explanation, guided recognition of forms, oral reading, translation, written practice, and collaborative work with biblical texts. As a foundational language course in theological education, B5050 prepares students for closer engagement with the Hebrew Bible in subsequent exegesis, theological study, and ministry.
Course emphasis. The distinctive work of this course is sustained, coached practice in reading Hebrew. Because biblical Hebrew is learned through the ear, the eye, and the hand, regular oral reading and written practice help students connect written forms with their sounds and patterns and develop greater fluency in recognition. Students will read aloud, work through exercises, identify grammatical forms, translate in context, and learn through practice and feedback.
