The Book of Revelation suffers from both misuse and neglect among contemporary faith communities. On one hand, fanciful and sometimes dangerous interpretations of its message can be found in books, sermons, and even Hollywood films. On the other hand, many contemporary Christians regard Revelation as just too strange or violent for serious engagement. This course provides an exploration and concentrated study of Revelation in the hope that students can make responsible and effective use of Revelation in their respective ministry settings. This class facilitates the close analysis of the Greek text of Revelation, active engagement with scholarly analysis of it, and an exploration of its history of interpretation. Weekly learning activities (translation, discussion forums) and periodic assessments (short paper, presentation, final paper) will help students develop their skills as interpreters and reflect on how Revelation can continue to serve as a resource for preaching, teaching, and pastoral care in communities of faith.
