History of Christianity:

Global Religion & Local Faith from 1492-Present

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines the texts and practices of Christianity as a global movement from CE 1492 to present, using historical and phenomenological tools to investigate ideas, people, and practices. The course will focus on the diverse traditions of Christianity as outcomes of cross-cultural and intercultural encounter and change. By examining Christianity as a worldwide movement whose practitioners traverse the boundaries of culture, language and place to create a “home” within the faith, we are better able to examine and understand Christianity’s diversity, conflicts, and legacies in our lived experiences today. In this course, we will also pay close attention to how Christianity is informed through the ongoing constructions of race, gender, class, and ethnicity.
