Christian worship has taken various forms from the earliest days of the church.  This introductory course will investigate the diversity of liturgical expression in the Western church throughout the centuries and in our current time, while also considering some of the common elements that all Christian worshipers share.  Special attention will be given to the five-fold order of corporate worship, the Christian calendar year, and the theology and practice of baptism and the Lord’s Supper.  Students will also explore the role of liturgy, prayer, music, and the arts as vehicles for spiritual formation for the church.  The course integrates theological, historical, biblical, ethnographic, contextual, prophetic, and pastoral approaches to studying worship.  It draws upon patterns of Christian traditions while also attending to practices that shape the worship of particular congregations.
